Little Girl
She wakes
From yet another nightmare.
Fingers clutching sheets,
biting her lip,
to hold her screams.
It’s the same,
once living, nightmare.
A little girl,
her when she was younger.
Filled with fear,
as the monster chases her.
Booze on its breath,
hate in its eyes.
Focused on her.
She hides,
it finds her.
“Worthless,
fucking worthless
piece of shit”
The monster slurs.
Hands flying,
connecting with
the little girl’s arms,
put up in defense.
She cries out at each blow.
No one hears her cries,
or they don’t care.
Little girl left alone with the monster.
Who will do as he pleases.
Will no one save her?
From this living, breathing nightmare.
Finally she leaves.
Her mommy leaves him.
Not for what he did to the girl,
she doesn’t know.
Little girl never told, but,
for not paying the bills.
Mommy,
little girl,
and baby brother
live with grandma and papaw.
No one knows what happened
to the little girl.
Not about the hits,
or the mean words,
or…. the other things.
Little girl
left alone to deal with her pain.
All by herself.
She grows up,
behind a façade she created.
Eyes still a mix
of brown and green.
Hair still a mix
of curly brown and blonde.
But the girl you see is different.
From the scared little one inside.
She pretends to be normal,
like she’s alright.
But they don’t see
the poor little girl,
still scared of the monster.
Scared that he’ll come back.
And play his sick little games
with her again.
She knows what he did,
and it’s wrong.
Sick.
Twisted.
Wrong.
Everyone see the girl,
at the cusp of womanhood.
She catches some boys eyes,
takes up a few offers.
But they don’t want to fix her.
They only want,
what the monster already took.
They see the girl,
the little one crafted,
to keep herself safe.
Outgoing,
cocky,
crazy,
funny,
emotionally reserved,
heart as cold as ice.
This façade put up,
to protect the little girl
who never healed.
Who never healed
from the terrible,
unspeakable things
the monster did to her.
